In the Philippines, how you speak isn’t just way to express yourself, but it’s often treated as a marker of your worth and class. If you speak with a Western accent, particularly in “conyo”, people assume you’re rich, educated, well-traveled, and above the rest. But if you speak with a thick Filipino accent, no matter how intelligent or articulate you are, you get judged and mocked—that's a deeply rooted social illness. Yes, there’s nothing inherently wrong with speaking conyo or code-switching. Many Filipinos grow up in bilingual environments, some speak Taglish out of habit, and others are just more comfortable expressing thoughts in two languages at once. But the problem begins when conyo becomes a personality, a performance, and worse, a pedestal. Over time, it’s become a symbol of social status, and is glorified by many on social media, in schools, and in everyday conversations. On the other hand, the Filipino accent, especially when spoken strongly and provincially, is treated with shame and mockery. People code-switch to survive or connect, but others do it to sound expensive, to project superiority, or to cover up insecurity, and we let it slide because we’ve tied fluency in English to intelligence and sophistication, even when that fluency is meant for validation. And what gets overlooked in this glorification of conyo is that many who adopt it aren't even fluent in either language; they’re stuck in between, unable to construct full sentences in Filipino, yet far from truly mastering English. But instead of seeing this as a gap to address, we’ve turned it into a trend with the accent, the attitude, the performative confusion between “like, grabe” and “as in, I can’t,” all packed to look cool and untouchable. It’s true that not everyone who speaks conyo is trying to show off. Some people genuinely speak that way because it’s what they grew up hearing; it’s how they think. That deserves respect—but not glorification. The line is drawn when people start looking down on others for not speaking the same way, when they treat straight Filipino as “baduy” or “jologs” and when they refuse to speak it out of embarrassment and shame. The thing is, language should never be used to intimidate, to exclude, or to look down on. It should be used to connect, to express, to represent. And our national languages and dialects—Filipino, Bisaya, Ilocano, and more; they deserve the same pride and space that English gets in every conversation. Our voice in its rawest, most honest form, holds more power than any borrowed accent ever will. We must stop chasing prestige through imitation and start embracing what was already ours to begin with.
