Panfilo Lacson confirmed that hearings on anomalous flood control projects are suspended. In a statement, he explained that while he had initially set a hearing, upon the request of Sen. JV Ejercito to summon former Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region 4B Director Pacanan, he said the session would not be productive at this time. The Blue Ribbon Committee has been investigating alleged irregularities in the approval and implementation of flood control projects, many of which were flagged for overpricing, substandard construction, and questionable awarding of contracts. However, lawmakers have also raised concerns over the allocation of billions of pesos for projects in areas with little to no history of flooding, with allegations that certain contractors were favored. This issue is now intensifying — because nothing can equal the anger of the people who were abused and whose trust was broken. But what about the issues that have silently faded? We cannot say that corruption is a modern issue because we have been suffering from it for years. However, we should not forget the past problems because true justice has still not been achieved. Suspension is not an excuse to cover up old problems, because we all know that the Philippine system is rotten. We shouldn’t focus only on the issues that are currently relevant — because every issue that affects the people deserves justice. If we remain silent, how can we bring justice to those who have been victims of this system’s greed? This system has made us all suffer. If we remain silent, it will be as if we are ignoring the people who have been strangled by it. This should be an eye-opener for everyone. We all deserve justice; we are all victims of this system. If we forget the past, the future will not move forward. Relevant or not, we should think about the other issues that are slowly sinking into silence. This is the time to fight for justice and fairness for all. If we continue to let them fade, they will never receive the justice they deserve. By simply speaking up, they will be remembered. But if we forget them, this system will continue to abuse us — repeating the same never-ending cycle.
