There is a subtle burden in being "the child they never had to worry about," isn't there? The typical kind of child who is always the academic achiever—the one who never brought home a bad grade, the one who never caused trouble at school, and the type of child who is somewhat always alone because, all throughout our lives, we built up self-reliance and the idea that we are not dependent on other people to handle ourselves and cope with the experiences we face in life. We are often perceived as the strong one, the independent one, and the one who learned to be okay even when everything felt too heavy to carry. We know that we can always handle everything. Maybe not all at once, but we always can.

Perhaps we are strong because we know how to deal with academic pressure. At some point, we are told that if we do not receive honors, they would undoubtedly be disappointed with us. Our sense of independence tends to come from the concept, "Kaya niya na ‘yan, matanda na ‘yan eh." That's also why, if we have a problem, we tend to keep it to ourselves rather than share it with others.

Psychologists describe emotional neglect as something that can happen when a child’s emotional needs are overlooked because they seem independent, obedient, or “fine.” Many children who become “the child they never had to worry about” learn to hide their struggles and carry their emotions alone.

There came a quiet moment when we realized our parents had stopped scolding us and started trusting our choices. This change was so subtle that we almost didn't notice it. Their reminders faded away, the corrections were gone, and yet there is still something that will always stay within us from the role they had held for so long. And somehow, that change carried a quiet ache because it felt like their way of letting us go, little by little.

We were forced to grow up too fast, becoming the independent child everyone expected us to be. But sometimes, we wonder if anyone saw the little child left behind—the one who wanted to hold hands and ask silly questions without fear. We learned to carry our own weight and figure things out on our own, acting like we don’t need anyone, carrying battles in silence that no one sees, and pretending we’re fine even when we’re not. But still, we keep going, hoping someone will notice what we’re going through.

Healing often begins when children are finally given space to express emotions without being judged for being “too sensitive” or “too dramatic.” Support, reassurance, and emotional presence can help them realize they do not always have to be strong alone.

And now, even when the weight feels unbearable, even when the silence feels like it’s swallowing us whole, we don’t know how to be anything else. We don’t know how to ask for help without feeling like we’re asking for too much. We don’t know how to cry without apologizing for it. We don’t know how to let someone carry us for once.

Because for so long, being the one they never had to worry about felt like the only way to be loved. And now, we're not sure who we are without that.

Somewhere within us lies the urge to stop carrying everything alone and simply be children again—without expectations, without the pressure of seeming okay all the time, without always being the child they never had to worry about.
