In just a matter of days, school violence has ripped through classrooms across the country with terrifying speed. On June 16 in General Trias, Cavite, a knife attack injured seven students. On June 19 in Cavite City, a Grade 11 student was stabbed by a schoolmate. On June 22 in Tacloban, a school shooting left three dead and several others wounded. Three incidents. One week. One undeniable truth: the classroom is no longer just a place of learning when violence keeps forcing its way in. And every attack leaves behind the same image—the red stain on the blackboard.

That stain is not just blood; it is the collapse of what schools are supposed to protect. The blackboard is where lessons are written, where futures begin, and where young people are taught how to think, build, and live. But when violence breaks into that space, it rewrites everything. The lesson is no longer about learning—it becomes about fear, loss, and survival. And that is a stain no school should ever carry.

Bullying is real. It is vicious, humiliating, and capable of destroying a person from the inside. And in the Tacloban shooting, the initial investigation of the Philippine National Police (PNP) pointed to an alleged grudge rooted in school bullying. That finding should not be ignored. It should force schools, parents, and institutions to confront how unchecked cruelty can deepen into dangerous consequences. But it must also be said with absolute clarity: bullying is never a justification for violence. Pain may explain anger, but it does not excuse harming others—especially those who had no part in causing it.

The moment someone chooses violence, the damage no longer belongs only to them. It spreads. Innocent classmates become victims of trauma, teachers are pulled into a crisis, and families are left carrying fear, grief, and questions that should never have existed. Violence inside schools does not solve suffering; it multiplies it.

That is why public sympathy must be careful. There is room to acknowledge suffering, but there must never be room to blur accountability. Being hurt does not erase responsibility. Being wronged does not make retaliation right. If we start treating violence as an understandable extension of pain, we risk normalizing it—and that is a dangerous lesson to leave in any classroom.

But if we are going to condemn the violence, we must also condemn the failures that allowed it to build. Because the red stain on the blackboard never starts red. It begins as ignored bullying reports, dismissed threats, emotional collapse mistaken for attitude, and isolation brushed off as teenage moodiness. These are the first marks—the faint chalk lines of danger. And when schools, parents, and institutions refuse to read them, those marks darken until they become irreversible.

This is why the Anti-Bullying Act and school protection policies cannot remain decorative. Paper shields do not stop blades; printed guidelines do not stop bullets; and policies that exist only to satisfy compliance are worthless when students are bleeding. Schools need real intervention systems, stronger security measures, and immediate action when warning signs emerge—not after violence has already made headlines.

And parents must stop pretending this responsibility begins and ends at the school gate. Home is where anger festers first. Home is where warning signs first appear. If parents refuse to listen, refuse to ask, and refuse to intervene, then they are not outside the crisis—they are part of the chain that failed to break it.

The red stain on the blackboard is what remains when intervention comes too late. It is the visible mark of warnings unanswered, pain left untreated, and systems that failed to act before lives were changed forever. And if there is one lesson this country must refuse to forget, it is this: no experience of cruelty gives anyone the right to create new victims.

Schools are meant to shape futures, to protect childhood, and to teach young people how to live with one another—not to become places where fear interrupts learning and grief replaces lessons.
