Truly, being a student leader means you hold certain titles—and somewhat, the authority, too. You are respected as people are mostly intimidated by the thought of you. You are viewed as high as a bird flying in the open skies. And at some point, you are loved. When our co-officers forget to do their job or when they cannot take our orders seriously, we can simply use our position to at least scare them for worse consequences. However, some “leaders” take advantage of their position and make use of it in a bad way. They often act superior—making use of their organizations as a pretext to escape responsibilities in the classrooms, just because they have meetings and other tasks to attend to. Even if there’s no existing task, they use it as an excuse to run away from it—and it is frustrating. I couldn't handle it when I heard that our co-officer from the school’s highest organization, which we both part of, makes use of it to avoid her tasks as the classroom president. It is a ridiculous thing to say it to her classmates since in reality, she barely even helps with work that has to be done in our student council association. Yes, presence was there—but what’s presence without actions? For front only? Although it really is a challenge to balance every task given, as leaders, we should know how to manage our time well. Titles are not something just for us to hold to experience the “special” treatment from others—it is a responsibility and an action rather than it being a status. It is unfortunate that most student officers nowadays fail to see the importance of what it is to be a true leader. They hate the dynasties happening in politics yet when it comes to simple club officers voting, they only vote for each other. It should no longer be a surprise if the boards are filled with people under the same friend circle—they must’ve planned it all along so they can post their pictures in social media with the caption, “friendship goals!”. In that case, you’re creating no difference. You are simply being a hypocrite. What are you, scared of your own shadows? The supposed cases that should be private and confidential are not something leaders should gossip about. Aren’t you ashamed as an officer? It is private for a reason and must only be addressed by proper communication with the discipline coordinator. And then after it, it should be done. “Pasok dito, labas doon”, just like what the elder people say. Because if you disregard that practice then you failed to embody the qualities of a true officer. Leadership is not just a reputation that we should hold onto so we can enjoy the privileges we are getting from it—there should be consistency, empathy, teamwork, and humility. Consistent in the means that you are doing what you promised during campaigns. We are empathic if we also view the struggles of others and make mere decisions to address it properly and correctly. Lastly, by being humble means staying grounded from what we are before and to now that we hold titles. Our titles should not just hold authority—but there should be respect, fairness, honesty, and transparency
