The deaths of Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili have left behind grief and unanswered questions.

On June 8, two young student-athletes died during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora. Initial findings from authorities pointed to strong currents as a factor in the drowning incident. Since then, multiple investigations have been launched. The Department of Justice has ordered the National Bureau of Investigation to form a special task force. The Philippine National Police has continued its own inquiry. Government agencies have requested reports, collected evidence, and subpoenaed individuals who were present during the activity.

What began as a tragedy quickly became the subject of public scrutiny. That was inevitable.

When two young lives are lost under circumstances that remain only partially understood, people search for explanations. Families seek answers. Communities demand accountability. Journalists investigate. Institutions release statements. Rumors emerge. Facts compete with speculation.

The result is often a struggle not only over what happened, but over who gets to define what happened. This is why the most troubling aspect of incidents like these is not always the uncertainty itself. It is the possibility that uncertainty becomes permanent.

Every major investigation begins with a simple requirement: access to information. Investigators need records. Witnesses need to speak. Institutions need to cooperate. Facts need to be preserved before narratives take their place.

Without transparency, accountability becomes reactive rather than automatic.

The burden shifts from determining responsibility to first determining whether the public is allowed to know enough to ask the right questions. That burden is especially significant when institutions possess information that ordinary citizens do not. Universities, government agencies, corporations, and organizations routinely hold details unavailable to the public. There is nothing inherently wrong with that. Some information requires verification before release.

The problem arises when transparency becomes secondary to reputation management. History has repeatedly shown that public trust deteriorates whenever institutions appear more concerned with controlling a narrative than clarifying facts. In moments of crisis, silence may protect an organization temporarily. It rarely protects confidence in the long term.

At present, authorities continue to investigate the deaths of Baterbonia and Adili. CCTV footage has been retrieved and is undergoing forensic examination. Government officials have emphasized the need to establish the facts fully before determining whether charges are warranted.

That process deserves the time necessary to reach credible conclusions. At the same time, the public’s demand for transparency is neither unreasonable nor premature. The search for truth should not be mistaken for a search for someone to blame. These are not the same thing.

Speculation can fill informational gaps, but it cannot replace evidence. Viral posts can amplify allegations, but they cannot establish facts. Public outrage can sustain attention, but it cannot conduct an investigation.

Only facts can do that.

The longer uncertainty persists, the easier it becomes for people to move on. Not because the truth was found. Not because accountability was achieved. But because exhaustion eventually succeeds where transparency fails. That possibility should concern all of us.

The deaths of Baterbonia and Adili are not only about two student-athletes. They raise broader questions about institutional responsibility, safety protocols, crisis response, and the standards of accountability expected from organizations entrusted with people’s lives.

Most importantly, future students and athletes deserve institutions where transparency is not demanded after a tragedy but practiced long before one occurs.

Justice does not begin with punishment. It begins with the truth. And until the truth is fully established, the responsibility to pursue it remains.
