A hospital is where people go when their bodies need healing. A courtroom is where people go when allegations are served and need to be answered. This is the question surrounding former House Speaker Romualdez’s hospital isolation to escape justice.

Former House Speaker and Leyte 1st District Representative Martin Romualdez’s confinement at Cardinal Santos Medical Center has raised questions about whether medical treatment and legal accountability can coexist without one appearing to overshadow the other. Romualdez was admitted on September 7, the same day the Sandiganbayan issued an arrest warrant over a PHP 7.4 billion plunder case linked to the anomalies of the flood control projects.

According to the admitting physician, Dr. Kurt Allen Sibayan, Romualdez did not pass through the emergency room, instead he went directly to a hospital room.

When does medical care become a legitimate necessity, and when can an unusual arrangement undermine the public’s confidence in the justice system?

Romualdez’s medical condition should be respected, and no accused person should be denied necessary medical treatment. However, medical confinement must not become a perceived escape route from legal accountability.

The issue is not whether an accused politician deserves medical care. He does, everyone deserves medical care. The issue is that the hospitalization becomes a convenient shield whenever the law comes knocking, the justice risks becoming a privilege rather than a right.

Justice must not only be impartial, it must also look impartial to the public.

Illness should never mean exemption from accountability. This establishes an important principle: being sick does not automatically place someone beyond the reach of the law.

The unusual circumstances create a legitimate public perception problem. When an ordinary citizen faces an arrest warrant, the expectation is straightforward: the person enters legal custody and answers the allegations in court. When a powerful politician facing a multibillion-peso case ends up confined, people naturally begin asking whether the rules are truly the same for everyone.

Justice loses credibility when privilege appears to influence procedure. Flood control funds are not merely numbers in a government document. They are supposed to protect communities from flooding. This issue extends beyond Romualdez.

A hospital bed should never become a shield from justice.

Romualdez, like any accused person, must be subject to the legal process. The allegations against him must be tested in court, and his medical condition must be assessed by qualified medical professionals under procedures that the public can trust.

Justice does not demand that the sick can be denied treatment—it demands that treatment does not become a privilege that places someone beyond the reach of the law.
