Every June, the world seems to burst into color.

Rainbow flags unfurl. Social media becomes flooded with messages of support. Brands release Pride-themed campaigns. Schools, organizations, and communities dedicate posts, events, and discussions to celebrating LGBTQIA+ people.

For thirty-one days, conversations about identity, acceptance, and equality feel impossible to ignore.

Then July arrives.

The rainbow filters disappear. The hashtags stop showing up on my timeline. The posts become less frequent until eventually they are gone altogether. This raises an uncomfortable question: if support only appears during June, was it ever truly supported at all?

The answer is not as simple as criticizing those who participate in Pride Month celebrations. Visibility matters. Representation matters. Public support matters. For many LGBTQIA+ individuals, especially those growing up in environments where acceptance is uncertain, seeing rainbow flags and affirming messages can offer comfort they rarely receive elsewhere.

The problem begins when visibility becomes seasonal.

I am not queer. I have never had to explain my identity to anyone. I have never had to rehearse a coming-out conversation in my head. I have never had to wonder whether the people who claim to love me would continue loving me if they knew a different version of me.

But some of my friends have.

And maybe that is why Pride Month has always left me with mixed feelings.

I love seeing them celebrated. I love seeing them take up space in a world that has spent so long telling them to make themselves smaller. I love seeing them speak openly about who they are without fear, even if only for a moment.

But there is something heartbreaking about watching the world celebrate people for one month and then forget about them for the other eleven.

Because while the rainbow banners come down, their realities remain.

The friend who still cannot tell their family the truth about who they are remains. The student who still laughs off hurtful comments to avoid becoming a target remains. The teenager who still searches online to find stories that mirror their own remains. The person questioning whether they belong anywhere remains.

And yet somehow, the attention does not.

Sometimes I wonder if Pride Month has become too comfortable for people who only want to be supportive when it is convenient.

It is easy to support LGBTQIA+ people when it is popular, to post a rainbow graphic when everyone else is doing the same, and to say “love is love” when applause is waiting on the other side.

What is difficult is continuing that support when there is nothing to gain from it, speaking up when a discriminatory joke is met with laughter, defending someone’s dignity even at the cost of becoming unpopular, and staying an ally when there are no likes, no shares, and no Pride Month reminders to care.

That is why I find myself questioning what many displays of support actually mean. If acceptance only appears in June, is it acceptance? If visibility disappears the moment it stops being profitable, is it visibility? If people only speak up when everyone else is speaking up too, is that courage?

We often talk about Pride as a celebration, and it is. It should be. Queer people deserve joy. They deserve spaces where they can exist openly and proudly. They deserve moments of visibility after generations of being pushed into the shadows.

But Pride was never supposed to be the finish line. It was supposed to be a reminder.

A reminder that LGBTQIA+ people do not cease to exist when the month ends. That support should not be seasonal. That human dignity should never depend on whether it is currently trending.

Because on July 1, my friends wake up as the same people they were on June 30. The difference is that the world is no longer paying attention.

And if our support disappears the moment the rainbow banners come down, were we ever celebrating LGBTQIA+ people—or were we simply celebrating ourselves for being seen supporting them?
