Not everyone grows up knowing what it feels like to have a father.

For some, fatherhood is remembered through bedtime stories, long drives home, gentle reminders, or a hand always ready to steady them when life becomes uncertain. For others, it exists only as an idea—a shape outlined by absence, a role understood through observation rather than experience. Some people spend their lives missing a father they once knew. Others spend their lives wondering what it would have been like to know one at all.

I was four years old when my father left.

At that age, memories are fragile things. I cannot tell you what his voice sounded like or what conversations we shared. I cannot recall the details that children often carry into adulthood. What I remember is simply that he was there, and then he wasn't. The last time I saw him, I was seven years old, during my grandfather's funeral. After that, there was nothing. No calls, no messages, no visits. Just silence.

As the years passed, I learned to live around that silence. I joked about it. I laughed along whenever conversations about fathers came up. Somewhere along the way, I convinced myself that it no longer bothered me. After all, how could I miss something I had barely known?

Then, during my final year of senior high school, I met a teacher.

The first thing anyone noticed about him was his voice. It could fill an entire hallway before he even stepped into the room. Students spoke about him with equal amounts of respect and intimidation. I was no different. Before I ever became his student, I had already heard stories about how strict he was, how high his standards were, and how difficult it was to earn his approval. Needless to say, I was terrified of him.

If someone had told me then that this same teacher would become one of the most important people in my life, I would have laughed at the idea.

We were not close at first. We simply existed in the same school, occasionally crossing paths. It was only during my final semester—ironically, when I was already preparing to leave—that our conversations became more frequent. Looking back, I think what stood out most was the way he believed in me. Despite my frequent absences due to extracurricular activities, he never made me feel like I was falling behind. He never treated my potential with doubt. While I often questioned my own abilities, he never seemed to. At the time, I thought it was a small thing. Now I know better. Being believed in can change a person. Especially when it comes from someone you deeply admire.

What began as brief conversations slowly became longer ones. We talked about school, ambitions, frustrations, and life beyond the classroom walls. Somewhere between deadlines, graduation requirements, and ordinary school days, our relationship became difficult to define using simple labels. He was still my teacher, of course, but he had also become someone whose advice mattered to me, whose words stayed with me long after conversations ended.

The strange part is that I did not realize how much he meant to me until graduation was already approaching. Like all endings, it arrived too quickly.

After our graduation ceremony, he told me something I have never forgotten. During my valedictory speech, I briefly spoke about my father. Later, he shared that he had nearly cried while listening. Not because he felt sorry for me, but because he understood. He, too, knew what it felt like to grow up carrying the absence of a father. For the first time, I realized that the person standing in front of me was carrying a wound that looked remarkably similar to my own.

A few weeks later, during a post-graduation gathering, we found ourselves sitting together long after everyone else had become busy with their own conversations. Somewhere between laughter and shared stories, the topic of fathers surfaced once again. We spoke openly about experiences we rarely discussed with other people. There was no dramatic moment, no grand exchange of wisdom. Just two people acknowledging a pain they both understood.

Yet if I were asked to identify the moment that changed everything, it would not be that conversation. It would be an ordinary afternoon at an arcade.

A few days before his birthday, circumstances led to the two of us spending time together at a mall. We wandered into an arcade, surrounded by flashing lights, noisy machines, and children running from one game to another. We played basketball. We walked around. We watched claw machines refuse to cooperate no matter how many times they were tried.

Nothing remarkable happened. At least, nothing that would seem remarkable to anyone else. But on my way home that day, I noticed how unusually quiet I had been. For hours, I could not figure out why. Then, slowly, the answer came to me.

The feeling was unfamiliar, yet strangely comforting. It was not excitement. It was not admiration. It was something deeper than both. For years, I had carried an absence so naturally that I no longer noticed its weight. Yet somewhere between arcade games and ordinary conversation, I experienced a kind of warmth I had never known how to name.

And for the first time in my life, I understood. This is what it feels like. This is what it feels like to be guided. To be encouraged. To be seen. To know that someone believes in you without asking for anything in return.

He never tried to become a father figure. He never claimed that role, nor would he probably describe himself that way. He simply showed up. He listened. He encouraged. He cared. Through countless ordinary moments, he gave me something I never realized I had been searching for.

A few days later, on his birthday, I gave him a letter. Three pages long and embarrassingly sincere. In it, I thanked him for his guidance, his trust, and his belief in me. More importantly, I thanked him for helping me understand something I had spent years trying to ignore—that there are some forms of love and care we do not recognize until we finally receive them.

The years before had taught me how to live with an empty space. But he taught me that the space did not always have to feel empty. That realization changed more than I can explain.

It made me want to become someone worthy of the kindness I had received. It made me want to work harder, dream bigger, and build a future that would allow me to offer the same encouragement to others someday. The impact he left on my life extends far beyond grades, lessons, or classrooms. It lives in the way I now see myself and the kind of person I hope to become.

Perhaps that is the strange thing about fatherhood. Sometimes it comes from the people we expect. Sometimes it arrives through the people we never saw coming. Sometimes it is found in blood, and sometimes it is found in presence. Not everyone who shapes our lives carries the title of "father," yet some people leave behind lessons, comfort, and guidance that feel remarkably similar.

My father left when I was four years old. For a long time, I thought that absence would always be one of the defining parts of my story. Then, during the final months of my childhood, a teacher walked into that story and quietly changed it. He did not replace anyone. He did not erase the years that came before. He simply made the absence hurt a little less. Suddenly, the space I had carried for so long no longer felt quite as empty.

So this Father's Day, I want to say thank you.

Thank you for every conversation, every word of encouragement, and every moment you reminded me of what I was capable of becoming.

Most of all, thank you for showing me, even if only for a season, what a father's love could feel like.
