I almost killed myself when I was fourteen.

I don’t remember it as something vivid. I remember the electric fan. That’s the strangest part. It just kept turning like nothing in me mattered. Like I was the only thing in the room that had stopped making sense.

I remember thinking it was unfair that everything outside of me was still normal. Like the world didn’t get the memo that something inside me was already gone.

Nothing dramatic happened.

That’s what I always come back to.

Just a room. Noise outside. My phone lighting up every few minutes. Messages I ignored. A meme somewhere in between. Something so normal, it felt insulting.

After that, everything continued anyway.

School. Group chats. I was laughing at things I still found so funny, even when my insides don't feel like me anymore.

I did not tell my parents.

I told my sister.

And then I went right back to school like nothing happened.

It sounds impossible when I say it now, but that’s what I did. I just… continued.

And then I got very good at managing what people could see.

Not in a dramatic way. More like habits I didn’t notice I was building. Laughing before silence could happen. Replying fast so nobody would think I was pulling away. Staying “normal” so nobody would ask what version of me came back after that night.

If I stayed useful in conversations, no one would notice the parts of me that were not there anymore.

That worked better than I want to admit.

People started calling me warm. Funny. Easy to talk to.

But a lot of it is timing. A lot of it is control from what’s left inside. Say the right thing, laugh at the right moment, and act like nothing is heavy, and nobody will look too closely at what you are actually carrying.

I didn’t go out that summer.

I stayed close to a few friends, but even that felt like something I had to carefully maintain. Like if I stepped too far away from people, I would fall back into whatever that was.

Everything after that felt like learning how to behave around my own mind.

Because anxiety is not just overthinking. It’s how one small mistake doesn’t stay small. It grows. It rewrites the whole day. Sometimes the whole week. A single awkward moment becomes proof that you are too much, or wrong, or annoying, or something people eventually leave.

And it sticks.

That’s the worst part.

It sticks even when you know it’s irrational.

There were years I became difficult because of that.

Not on purpose at first. Just habits forming without me noticing. I made jokes that went too far because silence felt worse. I pushed people to the edge before they could leave me first. I would disappear for a while just to test if anyone would notice things and then feel stupid when I checked and saw that most of the time, life just kept moving without me in it.

That used to hurt more than I could explain.

So I learned other things.

How to stay around people without fully being there. How to keep conversations going even when my head was somewhere else. How to read rooms so I could adjust myself before anyone noticed a change.

It looked like just social skills from the outside.

But a lot of it is just fear that learned how to behave.

There are things I didn’t say for a long time.

Like how I didn’t really live that summer after. I didn’t go out much. I stayed inside more than I admitted. I avoided anything that felt too loud or too open. Even small things felt risky, like one wrong moment could bring everything back.

I didn’t tell people everything that happened.

I still don’t.

But I remember how it changed habits more than thoughts. I started checking myself constantly. Replaying small interactions. Turning nothing into something bigger in my head until it felt real.

One mistake could poison everything. One sentence could become a story about who I am as a person.

And I believed it most of the time.

Still, nothing stopped.

That’s the part that doesn’t make sense.

The world didn’t pause for it. School still happened. People still joked in class. I still answered questions when called on. I still became older in small, quiet increments I didn’t fully feel happening.

But something in me stayed fourteen.

Not in a poetic-like way.

Just in reactions. In how quickly I assume something is wrong. In how silence still feels loaded. How good days sometimes make me uneasy, like I’m waiting for them to collapse.

And what I’ve been trying to understand since then is not how to turn it into something meaningful, but how to live with the fact that it didn’t end there. That I didn’t end there. That I had to learn how to exist inside the same mind that almost didn’t continue, and still somehow did.
