Death is usually the final sanctuary for those who have endured a lifetime of confinement, but for Manila’s most famous captive, Mali, even the end brought no release. After half a century of pacing a solitary enclosure for the amusement of onlookers, her hollowed-out shell has now been mounted in a museum hall for public viewing.

Mali’s story began in 1981, when the Sri Lankan government gifted the eleven-month-old orphaned elephant to former First Lady Imelda Marcos as a symbol of diplomatic friendship. She was plucked from the wild as a nursing calf, shipped across the ocean, and deposited into the Manila Zoo.

At the time, this “gift” was heavily celebrated because the Philippines rarely possessed such exotic creatures. Before Mali arrived, the Manila Zoo only housed Jimbo and Sheba; the former one passing away in 1977, which meant that Sheba was the only other elephant there to greet Mali when she first arrived.

Although her confinement was supposedly for public education, Mali spent over four decades locked in a solitary concrete enclosure that measured only a fraction of her natural roaming range. After Sheba died in 1994, Mali lived the next 30 years in complete isolation without ever seeing or touching another of her kind.

Official defense said that she was supposedly well-cared for, which doesn't really speak for her actual condition. Mali was given basic biological maintenance at best. In fact, the country even denied international sanctuaries that offered her a way out.

I cannot fathom the crushing boredom and profound melancholy she must have endured while generations of crowds snapped photos and tossed snacks at her. All we truly taught the visiting schoolchildren was cruelty towards other living creatures.

Expectedly, this kind of living situation steadily destroyed Mali’s body. By the 2010s, veterinarians noted that she suffered from potentially fatal foot problems and joint distress, the direct result of standing constantly on hard concrete. A decade passed in suffering, Mali died from congestive heart failure in November 2023 at nearly 50 years old. A necropsy revealed she had been silently suffering from a horrifying array of undetected illnesses, including pancreatic cancer, an inflamed kidney, and a painful accumulation of pus in her uterus known as pyometra.

Rather than granting her a burial, authorities spent 11 months preserving her remains for permanent exhibition. In August 2026, the Department of Tourism, Culture and Arts of Manila unveiled her taxidermied body at the National Museum of Natural History, an event proudly attended by former Manila Mayor Isko Moreno.

This sparked immediate outrage from youth advocates and animal rights groups like PETA, whose president, Ingrid Newkirk, lamented that the beloved elephant died exactly as she lived: "alone in a concrete pen.” We robbed her of her freedom in life, and now we have robbed her of her peace in death.

Defending this stuffed carcass for educational purposes is something I view as the ultimate proof that we learned absolutely nothing from her tragic life. It is an insult to a gentle giant who already sacrificed her entire existence for our amusement.

Nature intended wildlife to exist freely on its own terms, completely separate from our urge to cage, gawk at, and stuff them for fleeting entertainment.

Mali already spent a tragic lifetime on display, and she has more than earned the right to finally rest away from being a public spectacle.
