I was once a girl who believed our love story would last forever. Because of that, I was so certain that my future would always have you in it.

I thought we could reach that point.

I thought that was a life we would naturally grow into.

But it didn’t. A love story is still a story, and a story has an end. It ended not because we stopped caring for each other, but because of the circumstances that led us to fall apart.

You left, and I learned how to live without you. Slowly, quietly, I did the work of letting go. The little pieces I had of you faded as time went on. So when your message found me again on a random Saturday, it didn’t feel like fate—it felt like a test. For a moment, I almost let myself fall into a familiar illusion. No, what’s worse than that is—I almost let myself believe in who we once were. All the time and effort I spent keeping the past at bay, trying to prevent myself from remembering you—nearly brought to nothing by a single message sent out of the blue.

But then I remembered what it took to move on. I remembered the version of me who spent time rebuilding a life without you. And from that moment, I realized that just because something once meant everything doesn't mean it deserves another chance to be worth something again. Some love stories don’t need to continue not because they weren’t real, but because they’ve already served their purpose.

I’ve grown enough to know that I shouldn’t go back to what once hurt me, even if it meant so much to me before. Missing you doesn’t mean I should have you back in my life—it just means that I care, but I choose not to relive what we once had.

Perhaps this is what moving on really is. It’s not an act of forcing yourself to forget or trying to pretend that the loss didn’t happen—it means learning to keep the memories without letting them pull you back. Some part of me will always remember who we were and the way we came so close to becoming permanent, but my experience has taught me that some “almosts” are never meant to be completed, some “what-ifs” are meant to be left unanswered, and not everything deserves a second chance.

And in the end, I chose the version of me that learned to survive without you over the version of me that once hoped you would stay.
