Following the issuance of an arrest warrant and her subsequent posting of bail for grave threat charges, Vice President Sara Z. Duterte repeatedly declared to reporters and legal counsel that she no longer feels safe in the country. In response, the Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Fredderick Vida issued a measured statement expressing sadness over her sentiments while assuring the public that state law enforcement remains fully prepared to secure all citizens, including the second-highest official in the land. Yet, beneath the diplomatic phrasing of government officials lies a glaring absurdity in the Vice President’s sudden posture of vulnerability.

It is completely preposterous that the Vice President claims to feel ‘insecure’ only when confronted with accountability stemming legal action from her own acts. For a leader possessing such immense political influence and power, and protected by an extensive, state-funded security detail, declaring a personal safety crisis precisely at the moment of judicial reckoning is difficult to swallow. Her sudden anxiety is not born out of a genuine breakdown in public safety but rather out of an unaccustomed collision with legal accountability.

The legal troubles facing the Vice President did not materialize out of thin air, nor were they the product of baseless state harassment. The DOJ filed three counts of grave threats after Duterte publicly declared that she had contracted an individual to assassinate President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos, and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez should an alleged plot against her succeed. When an official occupying high office voices explicit threats of violence against the head of the state and key political figures, the institution of justice has a clear obligation to act. These legal consequences are entirely self-inflicted, triggered by her own incendiary public statements.

DOJ Secretary Vida captured the heart of the matter with his concise reminder: “We are products of what we have done. If we did something against the law, we will face the consequences.” The fundamental purpose of a functioning justice system is to ensure that actions carry weight, regardless of the actor’s stature. Equating the filing of criminal charges and the due process of law with a threat to one’s personal safety fundamentally distorts the concept of justice. Facing a magistrate to answer for explicit threats is not endangerment: it is the rule of law taking its proper course.

To frame legal accountability as personal insecurity is an absolute insult to the law. It is also a stark misreading of the reality faced by millions of ordinary Filipinos. Unlike the Vice President, average citizens do not travel with dedicated security teams, nor do they possess the immediate resources and legal machinery required to process bail within moments of a warrant being issued. Claiming that the nation has suddenly become unsafe simply because her own reckless declarations have drawn legal scrutiny exposes a profound disconnection from actual public security.

This offset reflects a familiar political strategy: weaponizing victimhood to deflect from substantive accountability. By projecting an aura of persecution and questioning national safety, the narrative attempts to pivot away from the severity of her original statements—promising violence against fellow government officials–and transform a straightforward legal case into a dramatic political drama. It seeks to convert accountable misconduct into an act of political persecution.

In a healthy republic, true security rests on the equal application of the law, where no citizen—whether a private individual or the Vice President—is immune from the consequences of their actions. Demanding freedom from legal scrutiny under the guise of “feeling unsafe” undermines the very institutions designed to maintain order and justice for all. Vice President Duterte is not unsafe because she is being held accountable; she is simply waking up to the reality where no one is above the law; discovering that in a government of laws, even the highest officials must eventually be held liable for what they say and do.
