“May puksaan ba?” former Governor Ramil Hernandez of Laguna asked in his recent shared post, minutes after seeing Governor Sol Aragones’ post in regards the lack of support in public hospitals—specifically hospital beds, wheelchairs, and facilities. Defensive he seemed, he started bringing up his past accomplishments to brag to the public that his term made actions and created a difference. But if his term truly made a difference, then why do public hospital facilities remain outdated? For the past decades, our country has been known to lack support in public hospitals—often, facilities are crowded, with one room shared by a huge number of patients, far beyond what they can accommodate. Laguna is the only province of Calabarzon without a level three hospital. It is common for them to lie down in damaged hospital beds, share one oxygen tank, and even use the dirtiest comfort rooms. Ms. Aragones, on the other hand, is now working on improving damaged hospital rooms and has now provided new hospital beds. To avoid the tension heating up as the issue escalates on social media, she informed the public saying “‘Wag nang manisi pa sa mga nakaraan, gawin nalang ang mga dapat pang gawin.” So, is crab mentality common to the Filipinos? Just because we cannot accept the fact that the other is doing well, our actions should not be justified by dragging them down. We must learn to be the ones who uplift each other. The past does not even matter anymore—his term ended for a reason. He might as well just accept that his actions were lacking during his era. Well, in all honesty, there is really nothing wrong with healthy debates, especially when both parties are fighting for the betterment of the said province. Yet, they both hold a figure in public. How will people look up to them if it is they who act petty instead of inspiring their people truly? At the end of the day, what will weigh the most are the leader’s actions over their vows that stayed only as promises. The people of Laguna have no time for entertaining political arguments; what will matter for them most are comfortable beds, clean hospital facilities, and accessible health care for all.
