Somewhere in a Philippine forest, a plant may already hold the cure for dengue, or the next antibiotic, or a cancer treatment we haven’t invented yet. We may never know. Loggers, land developers, and climate change are clearing our forest faster than any scientist can study what grows in it — which means the cure could go extinct before anyone even runs a single test. This isn’t a hypothetical. It’s the quiet reality of a country that sits on one of the richest reservoirs of biological and chemical diversity on Earth, yet lets most of it remain unexamined.

Not every leaf is a cure waiting to be found. Most plants will never become medicines, but among them are a few that might; and the only way to distinguish one from another is through scientific investigation. History has shown that nature is worth investigating. During the mid-20th century, malaria ravaged communities across the globe. Claiming the lives of families, rich people, poor people, old, and young—basically millions of individuals. In the midst of that crisis, Chinese pharmaceutical chemist Tu Youyou turned to a 1,600 year old medicinal manuscript describing the use of a plant, the sweet wormwood. From that plant, she extracted artemisinin, a compound that would later become one of the world’s most effective antimalarial drugs and save millions of lives. Even today, artemisinin-based therapies remain the global standard for treating malaria. Its greatest lesson is that life-saving medicines can remain hidden in nature until someone chooses to look for them.

The Philippines should be asking the same question. As one of only 18 megadiverse countries in the world, it harbors thousands of endemic plants found nowhere else on Earth. Every plant produces its own unique collection of chemical compounds. Some of those molecules may eventually become antibiotics, antivirals, anticancer agents, or entirely new medicines that science has yet to imagine. This biological uniqueness is one of the few scientific advantages the Philippines possesses that no other nation can replicate. If biodiversity is our natural inheritance, then discovering what it contains is our scientific responsibility.

Then why has such extraordinary biodiversity produced so few internationally recognized medical discoveries? The obstacle is the long journey from forest to pharmacy. A promising plant must survive phytochemical screening, toxicity studies, mechanism-of-action research, preclinical testing, and clinical trials before anyone can call it medicine. Most candidates fail. But you never know until you try. Every medicine that has transformed human history first survived the possibility of failure. Even artemisinin failed before becoming the anti-malarial drug it is now. The only discovery that will never happen is the one we never attempt.

Many promising Philippine species never reach even the first stage of drug-discovery research. On funding, the Philippines has for decades spent far less on research and development than international benchmarks call for: the country’s R&D investment is significantly below the UNESCO benchmark of 2% of the GDP. The Philippines’ R&D investment is around 0.2% of GDP in 2024, the funding places the country as the 3rd lowest in Southeast Asia tied with Indonesia. Additionally, scientists often face a rigorous, slow, multi-tiered bureaucratic framework that needs approval from multiple agencies. To conduct plant research, researchers must sequentially navigate three main phases: (1) securing clearances like FPIC from the NCIP, PAMB approvals, or local government consent; (2) obtaining core institutional permits from the DENR, including Gratuitous Permits (GP); (3) and acquiring Wildlife Transport Permits alongside provincial quarantine clearances to legally move specimens to local laboratories. Consequently, these layered processes and strict regulatory checkpoints frequently create major timeline bottlenecks for academic and scientific projects. Taken together, chronic underinvestment and a slow bureaucratic process mean that many candidate species are stalled or abandoned before a single assay is ever run. Thus, vast portions of Philippine biodiversity remain biologically and chemically unexplored.

We often speak of protecting forests, yet rarely ask what knowledge those forests contain—or what knowledge disappears when they are lost. A species can vanish long before we ever discover why it mattered. Perhaps that is our greatest misunderstanding. We have learned to value forests for the timber they provide, the tourists they attract, and the carbon they store. Far less often do we value them for the antibiotics they may contain, the antiviral compounds they may harbor, or the diseases they might someday help cure. Every species lost is more than another name crossed off a conservation list; it is a scientific question that humanity will never again have the chance to ask. Conservation, therefore, is not only an environmental responsibility but also an investment in discoveries that future generations may desperately need.

This is why protecting biodiversity and advancing scientific research should be treated as priorities. Conservation preserves the books while science is our way of reading them. Without forests, there is nothing left to study. Without research, we remain blind on why it’s crucial to save nature and what nature could give to us.

The Philippines has never lacked biodiversity. It has never lacked scientific potential. What we lack is the execution of transforming biological wealth into scientific discovery. Our nature is an entire library of undiscovered knowledge waiting for someone to open its first page. The “inexpensive pharmacy left to rot” is our biodiverse country filled with potential; and it’s important to turn that potential into reality.
