The first thing that bleeds after a puncture is rarely what lies deepest. It is the skin that gives way first, breaking itself before the wound can reach what is within.

Perhaps that is the burden of every surface—to receive the violence meant for something else.

In recent days, politics has begun speaking the language of poetic wounds: bloodbath, bludgeoning, and bloodied but unbowed. They arrive as metaphors, uttered in speeches and echoed across headlines. Yet words, much like blades, rarely stop where they are intended. They travel farther than the mouths that release them.

And somewhere along their path stands the ordinary Filipino.

Like skin, they never choose the knife. They do not decide where it is pointed, nor who first draws it. Yet they are always the first to feel its edge.

As those in power exchange accusations, declarations, and competing versions of the same story, the blade changes hands but the skin remains the same. One narrative claims to defend the nation; another claims to defend the truth. One warns of a bloodbath; another promises a political bludgeoning; still another emerges bloodied but unbowed. Every side speaks as though it alone carries the wound. Meanwhile, the people are left carrying the scar.

That is the quiet cruelty of political conflict. It does not merely divide opinions—it divides reality. Every narrative asks to be believed before it is questioned. Every certainty demands loyalty before evidence. And caught between voices that grow louder with each passing day, ordinary Filipinos are left to navigate not only political division but the exhausting search for what is true.

Skin cannot tell whose hand first held the blade. It only knows that it has been cut.

So, too, with the Filipino people. They cannot always tell where conviction ends and performance begins, where fact is buried beneath spectacle, or where truth survives beneath the weight of competing narratives. Yet they are expected to keep living, choosing, trusting, and hoping—even as every new wound threatens to reopen the last.

Perhaps the deepest injury politics leaves is not outrage, but uncertainty. For bruises eventually fade, and punctures eventually close. But doubt lingers. Distrust lingers. A fractured sense of truth lingers.

Still, skin does what it has always done. It protects. It endures. It heals.

So do ordinary Filipinos.

Long after the speeches have ended and the headlines have changed, they remain the nation's skin—bearing wounds they never invited, healing cuts they never inflicted, and searching, beneath the noise of every bloodbath, every bludgeoning, and every claim of being bloodied but unbowed, for a truth that does not ask them to bleed before it can be believed.
