When the government fears accountability, betraying the nation is its response. They often let their tantrums run wild in a chaotic society, where they tend to protect themselves when the masses take to the streets. Asking for transparency on the government's actions is not wrong; we should speak out about our concerns. Yet, their ignorance continues to deny the justice that people demand. Until now, impeachment has been a controversial matter. However, the fire is about to die out, but the lies still hide in the smoke. Recently, 19 senators, including Senate President Francis ‘Chiz’ Escudero, voted in favor of Senate Majority Leader Joel Villanueva's motion to archive the complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte, while four senators voted against it. After the Supreme Court (SC) labeled the complaints as "unconstitutional" as it violates the one-year ban on filing the impeachment complaints. It also required an appropriate committee and process to challenge Duterte. People have already glimpsed the incompetent service of the Vice President and are concerned about her potential plunder over mishandling millions of pesos in government funds, which has led them to take to the streets. They would not be on the roads if there were honesty; besides, it is about upholding the truth over lies. But if they still choose to deny, ignorance betrays the people’s trust. Her absence has already shattered the promises she made to the nation into pieces. It is not the people who are supposed to live with the mess. At the time when the Senate moved to archive the impeachment case, her presence was somewhere else—just not in the place where she was supposed to face her reflection. Instead, she was in a place that upheld power and dynasty after Malacañang had received reports that Duterte attended another rally organized by supporters of her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte. Thus, her promise is only to protect their power. This is not even the first time this happened. Malacañang warned her a couple of times after she failed to attend meetings regarding her alleged plunder, which is how she was noted to have mishandled P125 million in confidential funds. Concerns rose when Lemuel Ortonio revealed the absence of details and tracks regarding the implementation of funds. Yet it is even more alarming when she did not even acknowledge the implementation activities while the funds were in her hands. When they put an imaginary name on the receipt for the confidential funds, the mystery remained unsolved. One instance was ‘Mary Grace Piattos,’ one of the signatories of an acknowledgment for receiving a part of the P125 million confidential funds. Such a creative name, but no— we crave public accountability. Even worse, there is apparently no record of Piattos according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), putting the funds at risk. This reflects the color blindness of the Senate—red flags were already shown, yet they still chose to ignore it. Even the holy spirit would be ashamed of their lies. Even birds will fall as their wings start to melt because of losing hope when there was supposed to be justice. The people had enough of Duterte’s actions; we deserve better. It’s time the people's voices finally become enough to be heard. Moreover, the government should have started the impeachment trials a few months ago, yet they chose to waste time. Clocks are ticking, justice is dying. Some of them believe that it's necessary to protect the constitution and respect the decision made by the SC. They decide to preserve justice, but the wound is too fresh to be healed by intention alone. Instead, have they even considered respecting the people's choice? After all, it's their responsibility to serve the people. So, if justice is what they want, then why can't the people have it? It's more than enough for Duterte to face the consequences. The Senate's decision is a threat to our democracy, as public accountability fades away with no soul. People have already seen her actions, which led them to ask questions. Asking is not wrong; it's a way of lifting the weight off the chest of democracy. People cannot be burdened because of someone's action. The Senate should reconsider its decision by thinking of the people's demands. It is about the people, not someone’s favor. Duterte should defend and prove herself instead of ignoring her actions, because, after all, it is about acknowledgement. She must acknowledge her intentions from the root to the branches. And, no one should dare to gamble with justice for someone's power.
