Rest is supposed to be simple. To rest means to relax into something and let it support you. However, not everyone gets the same feeling when doing nothing. For some of us, idling feels strangely wrong—like you are supposed to be doing something right now—as if every minute of resting leads to a minute spent falling behind. In an ever revolving world that constantly praises success, being busy means that you’re being productive to the point where free time has become something we needed to earn.

For high-achieving students, this isn't rare. It's a routine. I would remember answering a specific recitation question in which I was the only one who got it right, and for a few seconds, the entire room knew it. The feeling of being the standout in a room of standouts—even for just a few seconds—has become oddly addictive.

So you start saying yes to more—the extra club, the extra requirement, the next recitation—not because you actually like them, but because somewhere in it might be another few seconds like that one. Busy didn't become the default because anyone told us to be. It became the default because that feeling was worth chasing on repeat.

In the process, busy stopped being a schedule and started being a personality. A status symbol, even. And rest stopped being something you're allowed to have, and became something you had to justify.

Ask any top performing student what they did over the weekend and watch how the adrenaline rushes, not because the weekend was restful, but because it was justifiable. Seldom, they say "I rested." But most times? it’s: I finished everything early, so I had time to relax. It sounds harmless at first, but if we flip it around, it would mean that resting isn’t about actually taking time for yourself but rather having enough proof stacked up to defend it.

We turn rest into a reward system—sleep in after the deadline, breathe after the season ends—except the season never actually ends. There's always the next requirement waiting behind the one you just finished, so the reward keeps getting pushed to a finish line that always moves five steps ahead of you.

But, of course, not every high-achieving student gets the privilege to step away from exhaustion. Sometimes, the workload is real, the deadlines are real, the activities are real, and the circumstances are beyond our control. However, there is still a significant difference between doing something due to it being a requirement and doing something to prove you deserve to rest.

Here’s the part I didn’t want to admit: this guilt was never really about productivity. It's about proof. If you're not doing something, how does anyone know you're worth something? I was one of those raised on gold medals and piled up certificates and being the somebody in a room full of somebodies. I joined every organization I could, recited as much as I could, and took up almost every competition—not because I loved all of them, but because not doing so meant having nothing to prove that I was worthy. Rest stopped being something I was allowed to have and became something I have to earn—at least that’s what I learned. To me, resting doesn't just feel unproductive—it feels like risking the one thing that makes me matter.

None of this was entirely my own idea, either. What is harder to admit is that it doesn’t need anyone else in the room anymore to still work. Take away the classroom, the group chats, the family asking how your performance is in school—leave me alone on a Saturday with no assignment due and I’d be double checking my assessment tracker anyway.

I didn't invent the idea that rest had to be earned. But eventually, I didn't need anyone else to enforce it. Which is why every “just relax” and every “just take a break” had landed on me like static. You can’t talk your way out of a voice that stopped listening to advice a long time ago.

You can't self-care your way out of a belief system.

To all burnt out students who saw themselves somewhere in this: there’s a term for that specific voice, and it's called toxic productivity, the compulsion to be busy and achieve everything even if it means giving up your relationships, your health, and your rest.

What helped me more than any pep talk was refusing to let rest wait for permission. I would always let myself relax—even for just a little bit—even if I haven’t finished a requirement and even if I barely passed a test. Sure, at first it felt wrong because I wasn’t used to it. But over time, it didn’t seem so bad—I felt better even. The world kept moving and I was still living in it.

And when the urge to reach for the next requirement shows up right after finishing one, I've learned to read that as the warning sign, not the discipline. Research suggests that when someone's sense of worth depends entirely on what they achieve, it can produce more fragile confidence and more stress—not less—no matter how much they accomplish. That reflex was never proof I was fine. It was the thing worth catching.

Our brains naturally prefer what is familiar to us, even if what’s familiar isn't necessarily good for us. Guilt and constant productivity had been my normal for so long that resting initially felt odd. But the more that I allowed myself to rest without having to justify it, the more I became familiar with it and the less frightening it became. Maybe breaking the cycle means that you should make rest familiar enough up to the point where we no longer feel guilty for needing it.

And maybe that’s why rest felt like falling behind. We have measured progress by movement for so long that being still feels like failure.

Maybe rest only feels like falling behind when we’ve spent too long believing that every minute must move us forward.
